Tom’s Blend No.1 18 Year Old, an honorary pour for the legendary whisky blender Tom Jago, co-founder of Last Drop Distillers, is an extraordinary whisky you’ll likely never taste. This special release, reserved for a private Last Drop event, was my fortunate encounter. Aged to perfection, this 18-year-old masterpiece is a fitting tribute to Jago’s visionary legacy.

A legendary figure in the spirits industry, Tom Jago is a true icon, and passionate creator who dedicated over six decades to creating famed spirits. From Johnnie Walker Blue Label to Bailey’s Irish Cream and Malibu Rum, his innovative touch shaped the global market. Partnering with James Espey, they co-founded The Last Drop Distillers in 2007, bottling rare, small-batch spirits. Jago’s influence, driven by his vision and creativity, continues through his family and his enduring legacy.

Tasting of Tom’s Blend No.1 Aged 18 years

Before we indulge, here is some background –This 18-year-old blended whiskey, known as Jago’s Signature Blend, comprises at least half of its contents from single malts. These single malts were carefully matured in a combination of sherry casks and American oak casks, contributing to the unique flavor profile of this exceptional whiskey.

Appearance: The whisky presents a deep amber hue, reminiscent of polished mahogany. Slow, viscous legs cling to the glass, hinting at the complexity within.

Nose: The initial aroma is a treat; roasted hazelnut, toffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, and honey take center stage. As the spirit breathes, a subtle smokiness emerges, reminiscent of a distant bonfire. Underneath, a rich tapestry of dried fruits and a touch of spice unfolds. Elegant, warm and inviting.

Palate: The palate is a luxurious experience, with a velvety texture and a wave of flavors that dance across the tongue. The taste is surprisingly vibrant and fruity, a tropical tang followed by oak, a gentle peppery spice and notes of caramel–a complex interplay. The mid-palate reveals a secret floral bouquet.

Complexity: The balance and harmony of flavors in Tom’s Blend No.1 are truly remarkable. Each sip reveals new layers of complexity, inviting repeated exploration.

Finish: The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering notes of dark chocolate, dried fruit, and a gentle oak spice. A  lingering drawn-out smokiness persists, adding a final touch of complexity.

Overall Impression: Tom’s Blend No.1 18 Year Old is a truly exceptional whisky –A testament to the legacy of Tom Jago and  the enduring quality of Last Drop Distillers. This is a whisky for connoisseurs who appreciate the nuances of flavor and the craftsmanship that goes into creating such a remarkable spirit.
