John Walker & Sons XR Aged 21 Years Tasting Review

John Walker & Sons XR Aged 21 Years is a blended malt and grain whisky from rare casks, with an unknown maturation timeline. What’s interesting is prior to 1860, the practice of blending single malt whiskies with grain alcohol was strictly prohibited in Scotland. When grain was introduced, things changed and the trend stuck, due to the economics, lower manufacturing costs.

This expression was supposedly created to honor the legacy of Sir Alexander Walker, grandson of John Walker, crafted from rare whiskies that have matured for at least 21 years. They have created a lot of marketing hype around this, so lets see how it. The package is elegant and gift worthy and sophisticated, but lets see if it lives up to its grand appearance.

Johnnie Walker XR Aged 21 Years Tasting Notes

Appearance
In the glass, the XR 21 has a dark amber glow. There is coloring added here. Swirl it, and you’ll notice its legs are thin and oily.

Nose
On the Inhale I get waves of honey, vanilla, raisins, candied orange peel greet you, backed by delicate floral notes—jasmine, perhaps. It reveals richer tones of fudge, toffee, and a subtle whisper of smoke. There’s a faint earthiness too, like polished oak furniture, grounding the sweeter aromas with a touch of maturity.

Palate
The initial sip is thin and as smooth as silk. Balanced, sweet caramel and vanilla with a touch of spice and musky earth. Vibrant honey and florals, ripe stone fruits like peach and apricot. Mid-palate, the complexity starts to unfold—spiced apple crumble, a hint of gingerbread, and warming cinnamon. It’s very balanced, not one thing stands out or dominates, there is some oak and nuttier tones and a light smokiness detected on the nose comes through.

Finish
The finish is medium and elegant, with a trail of honey, warm spices, and a charred oakiness. The grain alcohol leaves its mark and there’s a lingering sweetness reminiscent of crème brûlée, balanced by a soft, dry fade.

Overall Impression

John Walker & Sons XR Aged 21 Years is very balanced and would be enjoyed by majorities, it does not overwhelm or stand out with bold flavors but instead invites you into a layered, refined experience. For the premium price, a higher ABV would be nice. This is bottle to break out and share with friends who are not scotch snobs.

What do you think about XR 21? I’d love to hear how this blend spoke to you.
