Paul John Peated Select Cask: A Smoky Gem from Goa

When it comes to peated whiskies, Scotland often steals the show—but Paul John Peated Select Cask proves that smoky brilliance knows no borders. Hailing from the coastal region of Goa, India, this whisky is a bold expression of global craftsmanship. Paul John expertly combines imported Scottish peat with Indian six-row barley, creating a dram that feels both familiar and adventurous. Aged in American white oak casks, the tropical climate accelerates the maturation process, lending the whisky a distinctive richness and complexity. With its unique balance of smoky depth and vibrant sweetness, the Peated Select Cask stands out not just as an excellent whisky, but as a striking example of how regional character can redefine tradition.

Tasting Notes for Paul John Peated Select Cask

Appearance
A golden hue reminiscent of honey dripping in sunlight. A swirl reveals slow, languid legs.

Nose

The nose is a masterful dance between smoke and sweetness. The initial wave of earthy peat carries hints of charred wood and leather. Sweeter notes to emerge, and there’s vanilla custard, banana, honeynut, and baking spice, opening up to delicate layers of tropical fruit—pineapple and papaya—exotic and bright, but the main course here is spicey and savory, with a smoky presence.

Palate

The first sip is bold with spice, it’s thick giving an almost chewy mouthfeel. Theres the smoky embrace that immediately announces the peat influence. But it’s far from overwhelming, it’s warm, heady, and oaky. Sweet malt and dark chocolate rush in, balanced by spiced notes of cinnamon and clove. Mid-palate, the whisky develops a creamy, almost buttery texture, with flavors of toasted oak, caramelized sugar, and a faint whisper of sea salt. The tropical fruit from the nose sneaks back in, apricots and oranges bring a tangy accent. Very well rounded and balanced.

Finish

Medium to long and lively with the peat smoke lingering, faded oak, and a touch of espresso –  this is decadence.

Overall Impression

Paul John Peated Select Cask is a well-rounded, fulfilling, and affordable for all classes of whiskey explorers. If you’re a fan of peated whiskies but are curious about how smoky malts can be reimagined outside of Scotland, this bottle deserves your attention. The peat is bold but harmonized, creating a balance that both smoke-lovers and peat-curious drinkers can appreciate.

I think it’s a great option for a multitude of reasons, and it’s refreshingly unpretentious. Tasting the Paul John lineup gave me a glimpse into the diversity and dimensions found in each expression.
