My Taste Review for Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23 Year Old

Appearance
In the glass, Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve glows a warm amber hue. Gentle swirls reveal thick, syrupy legs that slowly cascade down the glass; this will be exquisitely rich and flavorful.

Nose
The first inhale hits me like a wave of butterscotch and vanilla. After deeper exploration, I sense brown sugar, a subtle nuttiness reminiscent of roasted pecans and candied ginger. It is very refreshing and smooth with minimal alcohol fumes. Breathing deep, I can feel the warmth enter my nostrils, giving me a glimpse of what’s to come on the palette.

Palate
The first sip is pure seduction—It is so full-bodied, it feels like a meal, the mouthfeel is thick with a velvety warmth that caresses the tongue. A sweet marriage of maple, vanilla, spiced honey glide effortlessly into a medley of dried cherries, dark chocolate, and cinnamon. The complexity deepens, showing off the decades spent in oak, giving Pappy a distinct sweet woodiness and the faintest hint of espresso. It’s an intricate palate balanced to near perfection.

Finish
The finish is as memorable as the first sip—long, lingering, and luxurious. The foundation of aged oak shows up strong in harmony with sweet molasses and a trace of tobacco. As the flavors retreat, the memory of their presence invites another sip.

Overall Impression

Few will ever get to sip on this 23-year-old Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve – this bottling is extremely exclusive and priced beyond most budgets, even big spenders. I was so fortunate to be invited for a sample in 2019 at a rare whisky show. The flavor profile is incredibly smooth, balanced and delicious; it tells a story of the art of distilling–A testament to why this whiskey is so highly coveted. Tasting it is a reminder of why bourbon holds such a cherished place in the hearts of whiskey lovers everywhere.
